A diverse range of knowledge and skills is required to inform and determine organisational decision-making in the modern business environment. This environment is characterised by a range of factors including globalisation, digital disruption, the pace of change and increasing and interrelated levels of business complexity—all of which need to be managed and coordinated. In a globalised world, the discipline and practice of strategy is crucial. Strategy provides a set of techniques and tools for leading, managing, coordinating and decision-making within an organisation, in times of complexity and change.
The study of strategy and leadership is valuable because it:
? provides an organising tool for leaders to use in dealing with uncertainty and change, both inside and outside of their organisation;
? offers a shared language for analysing and communicating the current position of an organisation—its strategic capability and environment—and for choosing, developing and coordinating an optimal strategic direction; and
? provides a logical process of analysis and evaluation.
